The Health Ministry has approved a new category for selection and nomination of candidates from ‘Wards of COVID Warriors’ under Central pool MBBS/BDS seats for the academic year 2020-21.

Five Central pool MBBS seats have been reserved for this category for the year 2020-21, said a release issued by the Ministry.

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan on Thursday announced the government’s decision to introduce a new category called ‘Wards of COVID Warriors’ in the guidelines for selection and nomination of candidates against Central pool MBBS seats for 2020-21.

The Minister added that the State/Union Territory governments will certify the eligibility for this category. “The selection of candidates will be made by the Medical Council Committee (MCC) through online application on the basis of the rank obtained in NEET-2020 conducted by National Testing Agency,” said the Ministry.

Central pool MBBS seats may be allocated for selection and nomination of the candidates from among the wards of COVID warriors who lost their lives due to COVID-19 or died accidentally while on COVID-19-related duty.

COVID warriors are all public healthcare providers including community health workers, who may have to be in direct contact and care of COVID-19 patients and who may be at risk of being impacted by this.

Private hospital staff and retired/volunteer/local urban bodies/contracted/ daily wage/ad hoc/outsourced staff requisitioned by States/ Central hospitals/autonomous hospitals of Central/States/UTs, AIIMS and Institutes of National Importance/hospitals of Central Ministries drafted for COVID-19-related responsibilities are all included, the Ministry said.

India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle, in its fifty first flight (PSLV-C49), successfully launched EOS-01 along with nine international customer satellites from Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) SHAR, Sriharikota on November 07, 2020. PSLV-C49 is the 2nd flight of PSLV in 'DL' configuration (with 2 solid strap-on motors).

PSLV-C49 lifted-off at 1511 Hrs (IST) from the First Launch Pad of SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota . After 15 minutes and 20 seconds, EOS-01 was successfully injected into its orbit. Subsequently, nine commercial satellites were injected into their intended orbits. After separation, the two solar arrays of EOS-01 were deployed automatically and the ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network at Bengaluru assumed control of the satellite. In the coming days, the satellite will be brought to its final operational configuration.

EOS-01 is an earth observation satellite, intended for applications in agriculture, forestry and disaster management support.

The nine customer satellites from Lithuania (1), Luxembourg (4) and USA (4) were launched under a commercial arrangement with NewSpace India Limited (NSIL).

Indian-American doctor Atul Gawande who has been included in US President-elect Joe Biden''s newly announced transition coronavirus advisory board on Monday said he is grateful and honoured to be asked to serve and contribute to ending the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 55-year-old Boston-based surgeon, who known for his writings and books about the medical field, expressed confidence that the virus can be brought under control, and lives and livelihoods can be saved.

"I'm grateful and honored to be asked to serve and to contribute to ending this pandemic. We have runaway spread right now. But I am confident we can get the virus under control, save lives and livelihoods, and bring people back together again," Dr Gawande tweeted.

The Nissan Magnite has just been launched in India, making it the newest entrant in the compact SUV segment.The Magnite’s introductory prices start at Rs 4.99 lakh for the base XE trim-level and goes up to Rs 9.45 lakh for the top-spec XV Premium (O) CVT.  The company has also announced that prices are introductory and will go up from January 1, 2021. 

It comes with a naturally aspirated (NA) petrol and a turbo-petrol engine.

Nissan is offering the Magnite in five main trim-levels – XE, XL, XV, XV Premium and XV Premium (O). In terms of styling, the compactSUV is well proportioned and has a muscular stance thatis accentuated by its strong body lines. Dual-tone colour schemes are available with all variants save for the lower-spec XE and XL, and add Rs 14,000 to the price.

Under the hood, the Magnite comes with the choice of two petrol engines. The first is a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder,naturally aspirated engine producing 72hp, whilethe second option is a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder,turbo-petrol unit (HRA0) that churns out 100hp and 160Nm of torque. Nissan is not going to offer a diesel engine with the Magnite.

In terms of gearbox options, both engines come paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox as standard. The turbo-petrol additionally gets the option of a CVT automatic gearbox,but in this configuration the engine’s torque output drops by 8Nm (to 152Nm).

__Nissan Magnite rivals__

Being a compactSUV, the Nissan Magnite will face stiff competition from the likes of the Kia Sonet, Hyundai Venue, Mahindra XUV300, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the Toyota Urban Cruiser. 

It is worth mentioning that the Magnite’s pricing makes it the cheapest offering in its segment, and by a decent margin at that. At its introductory Rs 4.99 lakh starting price, it is priced substantiallylower than the Kia Sonet (Rs 6.71 lakh) and Hyundai Venue (Rs 6.75 lakh), both of which previously had the most affordable starting prices in the segment.

Even on the higherend of the spectrum, the Magnite continues to undercut its rivals.At Rs 9.45 lakh, the CVT equipped top-spec XV Premium (O) trim is cheaper than all the entry-level automatic compact SUVs, barring the AMT-equipped Nexon XMA. In fact, the top-spec manual’s price is closer to its rival’s mid-spec trim-levels.

These factors combined should help increase the Magnite’s appeal in our market.

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has said that a new film city with an airstrip will be set up in 1,500 – 2,000 acres in the outskirts of the city.

“The government will acquire 1,500 – 2,000 acres for this purposeaProvision will be created at the proposed film city for an airstrip. All other infrastructure facilities will be provided,” said Rao.

He said plots will be allotted to film production companies to set up studios with state-of-the-art technologies to meet the needs of the future in the new facility.

The CM instructed that a delegation of officials and film personalities should visit such as film city in Bulgaria to prepare proposal for a world-class facility in Hyderabad.

According to Rao, there are ample opportunities in the tech city to further develop and expand the film industry, which is already famous for Ramoji film city.

“People from different parts of the country and different mother tongues have settled here. This city has the ability to offer shelter to anyone. Wonderful facilities can be created here for film shootings and all other film making activities to take place comfortably,” he observed.

The Chief Minister said about 10 lakh people are directly and indirectly dependent on the film industry for livelihood in Hyderabad, who all got affected by the cancellation of shootings during the lockdown.

He called for the resumption shootings as well as cinema halls, following Coronavirus guidelines.

Film actors Chiranjeevi and Akkineni Nagarjuna met Rao and told him that shootings have resumed. They informed him that theatres would reopen soon.

China has stepped up its road construction activity in the Doklam plateau to ensure that all-weather access is maintained in the region, where India and China were involved in a nearly 70-day stand-off in 2017, indicates a satellite image accessed by NDTV.
The August 2019 image here is of an over-ground 'tunnel' which shelters part of the key northern access route through the high-altitude Merug La pass.

A satellite image from October seen by this correspondent, indicates that Chinese construction workers have extended the length of the 'tunnel'' on this stretch to 500 metres.

VIJAYAWADA: TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday released the list of 219 office-bearers of the TDP State committee. Once again, priority has been given to BCs and other weaker sections in the panel. 

In tune with the party’s efforts to move closer to the weaker sections, over 61 per cent posts were given to them in the State committee. Of this, 41 per cent posts were given to the BCs. The party has provided 50 per cent representation to the sub-castes in the respective categories.

While 11 per cent posts were given to SCs, 3 per cent went to STs and 6 per cent to the minorities. Naidu, who had appointed former minister K Atchannaidu as the TDP State president,  gave vice-president posts to 18 party leaders and general secretary posts to 16. There are over 108 State-level secretaries and treasurers.

BCs get major chunk of posts in TDP's Andhra Pradesh office-bearers list

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has defeated the CM Chandrashekar Rao-led Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) to register a victory in the Dubbaka Assembly bypoll.

The counting, which was held in 23 rounds on Tuesday, has put the BJP's Madhavaneni Raghunandan Rao ahead of his closest rival TRS candidate Solipeta Sujatha by a margin of 1,118 votes. The Election Commission is yet to declare the result as the counting for four EVM is pending due to technical reasons.

Congress's Cheruku Srinivas Reddy ended its tally at only 21,819 votes as compared to the BJP's 62,772 votes and the TRS's 61,302 votes.

TRS state chief KTR has conceded defeat. "Thanks to those who voted for us in Dubbak. Thanks to those who tried for the victory of the party. The result did not come as we expected. We will analyse the results in-depth," KTR said.

The by-election had become the centre of a high decibel battle for the ruling TRS, BJP, and Congress in an otherwise ordinary constituency.

Dubakka by poll : TRS in shock, BJP in joy

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, voters of Dubbaka have turned out in large numbers for the by-polls on Tuesday, registering 82.61 per cent voting. The voting percentage in the rural assembly constituency could be revised with a compilation of the final voting numbers. Dubbaka had recorded over 86 per cent voting in the Telangana assembly elections of December 2018. The BJP appeared upbeat with the high voter turnout. “Dubbaka voters have today decided that the BJP is the right party take on the dictatorial regime in Telangana,” state unit chief Bandi Sanjay said.
